The Organizers are pleased to announce the 8th edition of the Carbohydrate Bioengineering Meeting (CBM8) that will be held at the Hotel Continental Terme from 10 to 13 May 2009 in Ischia (Naples, Italy) .

In the tradition of CBM series started in Elsinor (Denmark) in 1995 and fostered in the meetings in La Rochelle, New Castle, Stockholm, Groningen, Barcelona and Braunschweig (2007), CBM8 in Ischia aims to show the updated state-of-the-art of research on basic and applied aspects of carbohydrate bioengineering and to stimulate high quality research, inspiring those already working in the field and young scientists approaching glycoscience.

The Conference will include sessions on screening and protein engineering of carbohydrate active enzymes (CAZymes), chemical and enzymatic synthesis of carbohydrates, glycogenomic and glycomic, structural and functional analysis of sugars, glycoconjugates and CAZymes, applications of carbohydrates, glycoconjugates and carbohydrate active enzymes in health, nutrition, and biocatalysis.

First Announcement - May 2007
The European Bioenergetics Conference 2008 (EBEC 2008) will be held in Trinity College Dublin from 19-24 July 2008. This is the first time the Conference will be held in Ireland and will bring together scientists from around the world to present their work and discuss scientific discovery in the area of Energy Transduction. The Conference will comprise of Plenary lectures and three parallel symposia in areas such as Mitochondrial Dysfunction, Metabolic Diseases, Mitochondria in brain function/neurodegeneration, and Mitochondrial dynamics, as well as symposia on core topics such as Mitochondrial Biogenesis, ATPsynthase/ATPases, Membrane Transporters, Electron Transport Chain Complexes and Light Driven Energy Transduction.
Dublin is a vibrant capital with a lot of attractions to engage visitors, and Trinity College is in the heart of the city. We have already booked 250 rooms on campus and we will be encouraging delegates to arrange their own accommodation in one of the many hotels within walking distance of the University. Trinity is well equipped for Conferences of this size and I have an experienced team of local organizers who are helping me with the conference. A key emphasis for EBEC 2008 will be to facilitate the participation of young scientists. To that end, I urge you to forward the conference website details to members of your laboratory and to all interested colleagues in the field.

The European Molecular Biology Organisation (EMBO) invites entries for its 6th Award for Communication in the Life Sciences.

The EMBO Award for Communication in the Life Sciences is presented annually to a practising life scientist in Europe who has made significant contributions to public understanding of science. Launched in 2002, the award highlights the exceptional efforts made by many scientists to combine science communication activities with a full-time research career. The prize consists of a personal award of 5, 000 Euro and a silver and gold medal.
Winners of the EMBO Communication Award are also nominated by EMBO for the European Commission's Descartes Prize for Science Communication.

We would like to invite interested scientists to apply or to inform other scientists who might be potential candidates for the award. Candidates should apply using the official entry form by 30 JUNE 2007. The conditions and application forms are available on the EMBO website at:

Last year's winner was Armand Marie Leroi of Imperial College London. For more information please see: http://www.embo.org/awards/communications.html
